What Results to Expect
If your dogs are basically
normal and well adjusted (not mentally ill chronic barkers or high strung
and hyperactive), and you can control barking when at home and nearby,
then the UKS System should significantly reduce the unnecessary
nuisance and boredom barking in your kennel, home, car, or small yard,
especially when you are away from home and at night. At night, if barking
wakes you with the UKS System installed, you may have a trespasser.
If you use the UKS System at a field trial or on the show circuit,
using the optional auto cigarette lighter plug, barking should be reduced
at the event, reducing the stress from barking, saving your dogs' energy
for the event.
Please Note:
There are no 100% perfect cures for barking, that stop 100% of the
barking. The UKS System is not one either. Within a few days, if
you haven't noticed a significant reduction in the overall amount of
barking, especially at night, then you have a more serious problem than
just simple unnecessary nuisance and boredom barking. The following brief
discussion ennumerates some of the more severe problems, as well as some
solutions.
Protective Barking -
Your dogs may be barking for reasons unknown to you, such as at someone or
something that they believe is a potential trespasser or threat. They may
be barking at a neighbor who has in the past teased or threatened them.
The UKS System should not stop barking due to protective instincts.
The best solution for unwanted protective barking is to move the dog to a
place away from the perceived threat.
Dogs Trained to Bark
- Many people inadvertently train their dogs to bark. Most people do this
by accident, by rewarding their dogs with attention when their dogs bark.
Sometimes the corrections given for barking are so mild that the dogs
actually bark to get their owners to come out and correct them some more.
You will have to convince your dogs that if you come out when they bark,
it will be very unpleasant for them. When your dogs learn that
barking won't bring you out to give them attention, the UKS System
will take care of the unnecessary nuisance and boredom barking. This takes
a lot of work, but without it, nothing will stop the barking of dogs
trained to bark.
Feeding Time and Work
Time Barking - Nothing will stop the frenzied barking you see at
feeding time and whenever you take one dog out to be worked, leaving the
rest behind. We recommend that you disconnect the UKS System when
you feed. When taking one dog out to be worked, get out of sight as soon
as possible (remove the cause of the barking).
Hearing Problems -
If your dogs have been exposed to a lot of gunfire, or had some illness
earlier in life which might have damaged their hearing, they may not be
able to hear the tone to alert to it. If your dogs do have some very high
frequency hearing damage, but apparently hear normally otherwise, you will
not see the alert response in your dogs when you tap the UKS System
microphone. You may need to use the "A" setting, it should work
just as well, but you and your neighbors may hear it.
Chronic Barking -
There are dogs who can be described as 'chronic barkers.' Chronic barkers
either have a mental illness or are hyperactive. They do not seem to bark
for any definable cause. They do not respond well to any stimuli to stop
barking. Chronic barkers will almost always bark through cattle prod
technology anti-bark shock collar corrections and burn holes in their
necks. Vocal cord surgery has been the traditional solution for chronic
barkers (as well as neutering for future generations). Unfortunately,
vocal cord surgery is very risky and is not a 100% solution either. Many
chronic barker surgery patients get some of their voice back. Drugs to
calm the hyperactive chronic barker would probably work, just as they work
well with hyperactive children.
High Stress Environments
- The UKS System is not recommended for normal business hours for
boarding kennel, animal shelter and grooming salon applications. The
constant flow of strange people and dogs in and out is a very strong cause
for protective and fear barking. And generally, the animal is stressed in
such environments in the first place, further aggravating barking.
By all means, continue
correcting your dogs for barking. Your correction in conjunction with the
UKS System tone will help the UKS System work much better.
